NOURISH SERIES · WORKSHOP 03
Treatment Landscapes in Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders

Eating-related difficulties can involve medical, psychological and service needs. This workshop maps the treatment landscape while keeping practitioners attentive to the limits of community and private practice. It considers psychological approaches alongside the role of medical care, multidisciplinary working and the decisions required when risk, vulnerability or physical health concerns mean that additional support is needed.
What we will explore
- Medical, psychological and service perspectives on eating, weight and body concerns;
- How treatment needs may vary with severity, including inpatient, NHS, private and residential provision;
- What experiences of medical stabilisation, refeeding protocols or inpatient care may mean when a person comes to psychotherapy;
- A range of psychological approaches practitioners may encounter, including CBT-ED, MANTRA, SSCM, family-based approaches, focal psychodynamic therapy and guided self-help;
- Other relevant perspectives, including interpersonal, relational, compassion-focused, dialectical behaviour and acceptance- and commitment-based approaches;
- Multidisciplinary working and the possible roles of different professionals; and
- Safety, protective factors, medical intervention and appropriate escalation or referral.
